Wolverines Drop Dual Meet at Florida to Open Season

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team, the defending Big Ten Conference champion, dropped its opening dual meet of the season with a 156-142 loss to the University of Florida on Friday evening (Oct. 19) at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center Natatorium.
Five Wolverines combined to win seven different individual events, including sophomore transfer Kelli Stein (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Waterson HS), who posted two victories in her first dual meet for Michigan. Stein won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:04.72 and secured a first-place showing in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:20.00.
Sophomore Tealin Kelemen (Riverton, N.J./Moorestown Friends HS) was the other Wolverine to win multiple events as she swept the diving competition with wins on the one- and three-meter boards. Kelemen outscored the field on the three-meter by nearly 16 points with her score of 256.35 as well as accumulating a score of 254.35 on the one-meter.
In the backstroke, senior Lindsay Carlberg (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) cruised to a first-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke (2:00.82) while earning an NCAA B standard time as well as posting a second-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (57.52). Carlberg, a two-time Big Ten champion, also placed second in the 200-yard individual medley behind teammate Sara Johnson (West Bloomfield, Mich/Lahser HS) along with competing on the squad that placed second in the 400-yard medley relay.
The other member of the team to secure a first-place showing was junior All-American Laura Kaznecki (Wolverine Lake, Mich./Western HS) as she outpaced the field in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.84.
Other Wolverines who added multiple points to the team effort were freshman Amy McCullough (West Bloomfield, Mich./Mercy HS) and sophomore Anne Weilbacher (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales HS). McCullough, swimming in her first collegiate meet, was runner-up in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:02.61) and earned an NCAA B standard time in the 500-yard freestyle (4:53.56). Weilbacher, a four-time NCAA Honorable Mention All-American, was second in the 100-yard butterfly (56.72) and 100-yard freestyle (52.44).
Michigan will return to the O'Connell Center on Saturday (Oct. 20) when it will compete at the Florida Relays. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
