Pilja Named Big Ten Conference Co-Athlete of the Week

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan senior All-American Mark Pilja (Naperville, Ill./North HS) has been named Big Ten Conference co-Athlete of the Week for men's cross country, the league office announced Wednesday (Oct. 10). Pilja shares his third career Athlete of the Week award with with Penn State senior Stephen Walsh.
Pilja, who has placed in the top 10 in each of his four races this season, won the honor based on his third-place performance last week at the Murray Keatinge Invintational (Oct. 6) in Orono, Maine. By covering the 8,000-meter course in a time of 24:07.10, Pilja helped lead the No. 12-ranked Wolverines to a third-place showing at the meet behind No. 2 Stanford and Arizona.

With the honor, Pilja becomes the second Wolverine to be named Big Ten Athlete of the Week this season. Freshman Alan Webb (Reston, Va./South Lakes HS) captured the award on Sept. 25 after winning the Great American Cross Country Festival (Sept. 21) in Rock Hill, S.C., with a time of 24:05.
Michigan's next meet will be on Sunday (Oct. 14) when it hosts the Wolverine Interregional at the U-M Golf Course. The 8,000-meter men's race will begin at 11:15 a.m. following the women's race at 10:30 a.m. Other men's teams scheduled to compete at the meet include Bowling Green, Montana State, Pennsylvania, Purdue and Western Michigan.
