ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team pulled out a 129-114 victory over No. 17-ranked Big Ten Conference rival Penn State and defeated No. 19 Purdue 183-60 on Saturday (Jan. 20) at Canham Natatorium. PSU downed Purdue 171-72 in the other dual matchup in the three-team meet.
In their final home dual competition, seniors Chris Thompson (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg HS) and Scott Werner (Haymarket, Va./Paul VI HS) each had multiple victories to lead the Maize and Blue. Thompson, a 2000 Olympic bronze medalist, took first place in the 1,000-yard freestyle in a time of 9:11.23 and the 500-yard freestyle at the 4:22.87 mark.
Werner, Tim Sciliano (San Marcos, Calif./San Marcos HS) and Jason Mallory (Granger, Ind./Penn HS) took a 1-2-3 finish in the 200-yard individual medley with times of 1:50.14, 1:51.07 and 1:51.54, respectively. Werner also finished first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:59.67.
Sophomore Garrett Mangieri (Closter, N.J./Mercersburg Academy) helped lead the underclassman with a first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 45.04. Freshman Jason Coben (Newtown Square, Pa./Maple Newtown HS) had another strong showing on the diving board, finishing first in both the one- and three-meter events with scores of 302.30 and 322.30, respectively.
The 400-yard medley relay team of Jordan Watland (Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka HS), Werner, Christian Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) and Tony Kurth (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales) finished first at the 3:20.51 mark.
U-M will continue Big Ten competition next Saturday (Jan. 27) at Indiana beginning at noon.
