SYDNEY, Australia -- Incoming University of Michigan freshman swimmer Samantha Arsenault (Peabody, Mass./Gardner HS) earned a gold medal on Wednesday night (Sept. 20) at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. Arsenault swam the first leg for the victorious USA team in the women's 800-meter freestyle relay.
The U.S. team of Arsenault, Diana Munz, Lindsay Benko and Jenny Thompson set an Olympic record with a time of 7:57.80, breaking by over two seconds the previous record (7:59.87) set by the Americans at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Ga. Arsenault swam leadoff of the 800-meter freestyle relay in 1:59.92.
"We were all cheering for her," said Michigan head coach Jim Richardson, "and we look forward to having her on campus in a few weeks."
Arsenault will join the Wolverines in October when she returns from Sydney.
