Thompson Qualifies for U.S. Olympic Team in 1,500 Free

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- University of Michigan senior men's swimmer Chris Thompson (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg HS) finished second in the 1,500-meter freestyle on Wednesday (Aug. 16) at the United States Olympic Team Trials to ensure his place on the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team. Thompson posted a time of 15:09.16.
Thompson was one of 18 current Michigan men's and women's swimmers to take part in the trials but the only one to qualify for the team bound for Sydney, Australia. Thompson is a five-time NCAA All-American with six Big Ten Conference individual titles to his credit.
Thompson will be joined on the Olympic Team by former Michigan standouts Tom Dolan and Tom Malchow. Dolan qualified in two events, the 200- and 400-meter individual medley, while Malchow qualified for the 200-meter butterfly. Malchow broke the Olympic Trials record in the 200 fly with a 1:55.67 time in the preliminaries.
The Olympic swimming competition will run Sept. 16-23 at the Sydney International Aquatic Centre.
