Toman Heading to Olympic Trials

Toman finished the All-Around finals in 13th place, with a score of 54.450. Contributing to that mark, was a first place finish on the parallel bars (9.825). He also placed fifth on the still rings (9.525) and eighth on the floor exercise (9.175). Toman completed the competition with a two-day combined score of 108.475, to secure his spot at the Olympic Trials.
Michigan Co-male Athlete of the Year, Scott Vetere (Pennsburg,Pa./Quakerstown HS), finished eighth in the All-Around competition (55.175) but fell one slot shy of the Olympic Trials, placing 15th overall, with a score of 108.025. Vetere performed well during the finals, garnering a second place score on the parallel bars (9.750) and fifth on the floor exercise (9.300).
Sophomore Brad Kenna (Barberton, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit HS) finished both the All-Around competition and the Championship in 17th place. In the finals, Kenna scored a 51.300, to give him a combined two-day score of 105.550. Kenna finished the still rings with a score of 9.300, to give him a ninth place mark. He also scored an 8.600 on the parallel bars, to finish the event in 11th.
Freshmen Kris Zimmerman (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier HS) placed 23rd during the finals, with a score of 51.300, and 20th overall (104.200). The co-NCAA national parallel bars champion scored a 9.650 on the apparatus, to finish with fourth place honors. Zimmerman also placed twelfth on the still rings, with a mark of 9.150.
The parallel bars were the strong suit for the Wolverines, who all placed within the top eleven. Following Toman's event winning mark of 9.825 and Vetere's runner-up slot (9.750), Zimmerman and Kenna finished fourth (9.650) and eleventh (9.350), respectively. Michigan also performed well on the still rings, with Toman and Kenna both finishing in the top ten and Zimmerman and Vetere in 12th and 13th.
Toman will advance to the U.S. Olympic Trials. From there, four spots will be determined by a combination of scores from both the U.S. Championships and the Olympic Trials. The remaining two spots will be decided by a committee based on the needs of the team. The Trials begin on Thursday, August 17, at the Fleet Center in Boston, Mass.
