Wolverines Aim for National Team Spots

Competing for the opportunity to be named to the 2000 Senior National Team were junior Justin Toman (Wallingford, Conn./Lyman Hall HS), sophomores Scott Vetere (Pennsburg, Pa./Quakerstown HS) and Brad Kenna (Barberton, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit HS) and freshman Kris Zimmerman (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier HS). Sophomore Daniel Diaz-Luong (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt HS) also advanced from the GymJam National Qualifier (July 8) but did not compete at this event.
Leading the way for the Wolverines was Toman, who finished in 12th place, with a total score of 54.025. The NCAA co-national parallel bars champion took home a silver medal on the apparatus, with a score of 9.700. He was also awarded a sixth place finish on the still rings (9.500). Toman finished 15th on the floor exercise (9.125) and was the top scoring Wolverine at the vault (9.150).
Following c1ose behind were Zimmerman, Vetere and Kenna, who finished 16th, 17th and 18th, respectively.
Zimmerman finished with a combined score of 52.900. Contributing to this score were a tenth place mark on the parallel bars (9.150), a 13th place finish on the high bar (9.200) and a 14th spot of 9.100 on the still rings.
Vetere, a member of the 1999 Senior National Team, finished the night with an all-around score of 52.850. Garnering a mark of 9.550 on the still rings, Vetere took home fifth place event honors. He also finished in 18th place on the pommel horse (8.700) and 16th on the high bar (8.800).
Finishing with a mark of 52.750, Kenna accumulated a 12th place finish on the floor exercise, with a score of 9.200, and an 11th place finish on the still rings (9.250). Kenna's mark of 8.250 (24th place) on the pommel horse set a new personal career high.
Leading the competition is four-time national champion Blaine Wilson, who finished the preliminary event with a score of 58.225. All 35 competitors will advance to the All-Around Finals, which will determine the 14-man 2000 U.S. National Team.
The four Wolverines return to action on Friday, July 28, for the All-Around Finals of the John Hancock U.S. Gymnastics Championships at 7:00 p.m. (CST) in St. Louis, Mo. at the Kiel Center.
