ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- After dropping the doubles point, Minnesota rebounded with four straight singles victories to post a 4-1 win over Iowa on Friday afternoon (April 28) in the quarterfinals of the 2000 Big Ten Women's Tennis Championship at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Golden Gophers (20-4), the No. 4 seed, advance to the semifinals to face top-seeded Ohio State tomorrow at noon.
Iowa grabbed the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots in the lineup. Natalya Dawaf and Jennifer Sinclair won an impressive 8-3 match at No. 2, beating Kim Simonsen and Tammy Wang. Shera Wiegler and Toni Neykova secured the team point with an 8-5 win over Sandra Olsen and Michaela Havelkova at the top spot. The match at No. 3 was abandoned after Iowa cliched the doubles point.
Minnesota fought back in singles, claiming three straight-set wins and a three-set victory to claim the 4-1 final margin.
