ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Second-seeded Illinois dispatched No. 7 seed Purdue 4-2 on Friday (April 28) in second-round action at the 2000 Big Ten Conference Women's Tennis Championship. Illinois is the second team to advance to Saturday's semifinal round, joining top seed Ohio State.
Illinois gained a key 1-0 advantage early after taking two of the three doubles matches. After Purdue and Illinois split wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles slots, the crucial doubles point came down to the No. 2 match, in which Illinois' tandem of Simone Kung and Michelle Webb was able to pull out a 9-7 win over Purdue's No. 2 doubles pair.
Purdue quickly knotted the match at one apiece after Jen Embry breezed to a 6-0, 6-4 victory in the No. 1 singles slot. Illinois answered right back at the No. 6 singles position as Natalia Manasova earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory. The two teams again traded singles wins with Melissa Igbal of Purdue winning the No. 3 singles match 7-6 (3), 6-2, while Carla Rosenberg of Illinois took the No. 5 singles match 7-6 (3), 6-2.
With Illinois owning a 3-2 lead, the No. 2 and No. 4 singles matches each went to a third set. A hard-fought match in the No. 2 slot never got a chance to finish because Illinois' Natascha Loebnitz finished off a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 comeback victory in the No. 4 singles slot to give the Fighting Illini the victory.
Illinois advances to the semifinals on Saturday (April 29, noon) to face the winner of the match between No. 3 seed Northwestern and No. 6 Indiana.
