ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In first-round action of the 2000 Big Ten Conference Women's Tennis Championship, seventh seed Purdue University jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead but had to hold off a late charge from 10th-seeded Penn State to earn a 4-2 victory Thursday (April 27) and advance to the second round of the tournament.
Purdue earned the doubles point with wins from its No. 2 and No. 3 doubles tandems. The Boilermakers' young No. 2 doubles tandem of freshman Melissa Igbal and sophomore Linsey Fick keyed the run with a 8-5 win over their Penn State counterparts.
Igbal closed a very productive day for herself by also winning in the No. 3 singles slot, 6-4, 6-4 over Ali Barnett. Igbal's two-set win coupled with Jennifer Embry's quick 6-1, 6-1 win over Pilar Montgomery in the No. 1 singles slot gave Purdue a commanding 3-0 lead.
However, the other four singles matches all went to a third set, with Penn State winning at the No. 2 and No. 6 singles slots. Penn State's bid at a comeback was squelched by Erika Quebe, who joined Igbal as the only winners in both singles and doubles play, as she defeated Judy Wang 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 in the No. 4 slot to secure the victory.
The win sends Purdue into the second round for a matchup with second-seeded Illinois tomorrow (Friday, April 28) at 10 a.m.
