Wolverines Host Big Ten Championship
The Michigan women's tennis team hosts the 19th annual Big Ten Conference Championship this week at the Varsity Tennis Center. The single-elimination team tournament that crowns the conference champion begins Thursday, April 27, and runs through Sunday, April 30. The championship match of the 2000 tournament takes place at noon on Sunday afternoon. The schedule and complete match-by-match results from the Big Ten Championship can be accessed via MGoBlue.com's championship coverage.
Wolverines Enter as No. 8 Seed
For the second straight year, Michigan will play in the No. 8 seed vs. No. 9 seed match in the first round of the Big Ten Championship (lost 4-2 as No. 9 to No. 8 Purdue last year). Michigan enters the conference tournament as the No. 8 seed and faces No. 9 seed Wisconsin on Thursday (April 27, 10 a.m.) with the winner facing No. 1 seed Ohio State in the quarterfinals Friday (April 28, 10 a.m.).
Michigan vs. Wisconsin
This will be the 29th meeting between the two programs and the fourth time they've met in team competition at the Big Ten Championship (series is tied 2-2 in conference tournament action). Wisconsin leads the all-time series 17-11 but the Wolverines hold a slight 6-4 advantage in the last 10 meetings. U-M has a 7-15 record against the Badgers under head coach Bitsy Ritt, a 1984 University of Wisconsin graduate. Michigan won a close 4-3 match in Madison earlier this month.
Last Year at the Big Ten Championship
The No. 9-seeded Michigan Wolverines lost 4-3 in the first round to No. 8-seeded Purdue at the MSU Tennis Facility in East Lansing. The Boilermakers won the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 2, while then sophomores Alison Sinclair (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins HS) and Szandra Fuzesi (Budapest, Hungary/Balassi Balint Gimnazium) posted an 8-5 win at No. 3. Michigan managed singles victories by then junior Danielle Lund (Leominster, Mass./Leominster HS) and Sinclair at No. 2 and No. 6, respectively. Purdue claimed the win by earning victories at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 (the match at No. 4 was abandoned).
Senior Class Makes Final Big Ten Championship Appearance
This year's senior class consisting of Brooke Hart (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson HS), Danielle Lund and Erryn Weggenman (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) have been to the championship match twice in their first three seasons. They beat Indiana in 1997 to claim the program's first-and-only Big Ten title and lost to the Hoosiers in 1998.
Lund Chasing Fourth in Career Victories
Senior co-captain Danielle Lund enters the Wisconsin match needing two victories for fourth place on Michigan's all-time career singles list. Lund has compiled an 80-57 career singles mark and is two wins shy of equaling Liz Cyganiak (1992-95) for fourth place. The school record is 100 wins held by Sarah Cyganiak (1994-97).
Last year's Big Ten Conference Sportswoman of the Year, Lund has compiled a 16-9 overall singles record and an 11-5 dual match mark at No. 2. She leads the team with a .688 dual match winning percentage and is second on the team with a 5-5 Big Ten dual match record. Lund teams with junior Szandra Fuzesi to tally an 8-5 doubles record, including a team-best 6-2 mark at the No. 2 spot.
Hart Nearing 25 Wins
Senior co-captain Brooke Hart heads into the Big Ten Championship needing three victories to reach 25 this season. Hart leads the team in overall singles wins (22-11), winning percentage (.667), dual match victories (13-7), Big Ten wins (7-3) and regional victories (14-7). She was named the Big Ten Player of the Month for March and finished the regular season with a 7-3 conference dual match record at the No. 1 singles spot. Hart also leads in doubles wins (12) and teams with freshman Jen Duprez (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton Beach HS) to collect a 5-4 record at the top spot in the lineup (5-6 overall mark).
Hart ranks eighth in career singles victories at Michigan with a 72-57 career mark. She needs two victories to surpass Sora Moon (1995-98) for seventh place and four wins to equal Stacy Berg (1988-91) for sixth place.
