MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team completed its season Saturday evening (March 25) at the 2000 NCAA Championships, finishing 14th at the University Aquatic Center. The final day of action witnessed the Maize and Blue turn in three All-America performances among an impressive five top-12 finishers, and the Wolverines completed the three-day competition with 119 team points. Texas placed first with 538 points, with 1999 champion Auburn (385) finishing second and Arizona (360.5) third to round out the top three.
In the first event of the evening, the Wolverines captured three of the top 12 places in the 1,500-meter freestyle, led by junior Chris Thompson's (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg HS) runner-up finish. Thompson, who held the lead for approximately the first half of the race, finished in a career-best time of 14:35.95. Sophomore Tim Siciliano (San Marcos, Calif./San Marcos HS) turned in a fourth-place performance with a time of 14:48.59. Both Thompson and Siciliano earned All-America honors for their top-eight performances.
Senior tri-captain Mike McWha (Windsor, Ontario/Kennedy Collegiate Institute) also performed well in the 1,500 freestyle, earning Honorable Mention All-America status for his 12th-place finish (15:09.00).
Three events later, Michigan placed two of the top 11 finishers in the 200-meter breaststroke. Sophomore Jeff Hopwood (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto HS) turned in an All-America performance with his time of 2:10.09, good for fourth place. Junior Scott Werner (Haymarket, Va./Paul VI HS) placed 11th with a time of 2:12.17 to earn All-America Honorable Mention.
During the three days of competition, the Wolverines collected five All-America honors -- led by Siciliano's national championship in the 400-meter individual medley -- and 10 Honorable Mention All-America awards. Complete results, along with post-event awards, are available at the NCAA Championships site.

Michigan Head Coach Jon Urbanchek
On the 1,500-meter freestyle ... "It was a great swim for America. It is the first time in four years that Americans finished 1-2 in the event. Both Chris Thompson and [Southern Cal's Erik] Vendt swam under the existing American record. It was probably the most exciting race of the evening."
On Jeff Hopwood's personal-best performance in the 200-meter breaststroke ... "Jeff swam really well, placing fourth. His time was good; it was his lifetime best."
