Trio Leads U-M in Day One of NCAA Championships

U-M was led by junior Chris Thompson (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg HS) and sophomore Tim Siciliano (San Marcos, Calif./San Marcos HS) in the 400-meter freestyle, and freshman Tony Kurth (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales HS) in the 200-yard individual medley.
The Wolverines turned in two of the top 11 finishers in the 400-meter freestyle in putting 22 points on the board in the second event of the evening. Thompson placed third in the finals session after posting the top time in prelims earlier in the day. His finals time was 3:43.81, and the top-eight finish earns him All-America honors for the fifth time in his career. Siciliano placed 11th (3:46.69) to earn All-America Honorable Mention. Senior tri-captain Mike McWha (Windsor, Ontario/Kennedy Collegiate Institute) finished 38th (3:52.59).
U-M also earned points in the 200-meter individual medley as Kurth finished in 16th place with a time of 2:01.96. The finish earned him All-America Honorable Mention for finishing in the second eight (places 9-16. Junior Scott Werner (Haymarket, Va./Paul VI HS) placed 25th (2:01.22).
The action continues Friday and Saturday (March 24-25) at the University Aquatic Center. Preliminary sessions begin at noon CST with finals at 7 p.m. Complete results are available at the NCAA Championships site.
