Wolverines Head West to Compete in Stanford Invitational
In the second meet of the 2000 outdoor season, the Wolverines head west to compete in the Stanford Invitational, held on the campus of Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif. The meet, which will be run on Saturday and Sunday (March 25-26), will take place at Cobb Track and Angell Field. The Stanford Invitational is a premier early season meet for outdoor track and field competitors. The field will showcase top performers from across the nation in both collegiate and high school competitions.
Michigan Kicks Off Outdoor Season with a Bang
Michigan traveled south to Tallahassee, Fla., on Friday and Saturday (March 17-18) to compete in the Florida State Relays. The meet, held at the Mike Long Track, kicked off the 2000 outdoor season for the Wolverines. The team dominated the relay events while proving successful in the individual events as well.
Relay Dominance
The Wolverines showed some early season dominance this past weekend by putting together three winning relay teams at the Florida State Relays. The Wolverines finished ahead of the field in the 4x800-meter relay (8:56.36), 4x1,500-meter Relay (18:44.92) and the distance medley relay (11:40.15). Also finishing with a strong showing were the 1,600-meter sprint medley relay team, which finished second (4:10.95), and the 4x400-meter relay team, which also finished second (3:45.80). The 4x200-meter relay team came in third (1:38.90).
Strong Start for Sprinters
Regine Caruthers (Inglewood, Calif./St. Bernard HS) started the season off with a victory in the 400-meter run (55.48). Following not far behind was teammate Maria Brown (Kingston, Jamaica/Immaculate Conception HS), who took third with a time of 55.98.
Bentley Continues to Soar
Senior Brandi Bentley (Detroit, Mich./Marian HS), who finished the 2000 indoor season as a two-time Big Ten long jump champion, continued her dominance, winning the long jump event in the first outdoor meet of the season. At the Florida State Relays, Bentley jumped 19-7 to capture the victory. Teammates Tanisha Williams (Ypsilanti, Mich./Ypsilanti HS) and Tasha Phillips (Sarasota, Fla./Booker HS) finished sixth (18-1/2) and seventh (17-7), respectively.
Ryan Leads Distance Runners in 3,000
Katie Ryan (Rochester, Mich./Rochester HS), led the Wolverine distance runners with a victory in the 3,000-meter run (4:35.67). Two other Michigan runners finished in the top eight in this event. Sarah Hamilton (Plymouth, Mich./Canton HS) captured fourth place (4:39.99), while Rachel Sturtz (Traverse, Mich./Traverse HS) finished eighth (4:44.22). Sturtz also finished a strong fourth place in the 800-meter run (2:17.04), with Hamilton finishing sixth (2:18.88).
Hurdlers Make Steady Strides
Junior Tamika Craig (Inkster, Mich./Dearborn Robichaud HS) led a strong group of Michigan hurdlers with a third-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.95. In the 100-meter hurdles, four Wolverines finished in the top 20. Tasha Phillips led that pack with a fifth-place finish (14.14), and Robin Landfair (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) followed with a seventh-place finish (14.45). In the open 100-meter hurdles, Phillips and Landfair finished third and fourth, respectively, with times of 14.38 and 14.47. In that same race, teammate Ashlie Wilbon (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon HS) came in a close fifth (14.76).
Throwers in Third
Michigan throwers, April Phillips (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS), and Erin Massengale (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney HS) both finished third in throwing competition. Phillips shot put heave of 43-11 3/4 and Massengale's discus throw of 143-9 were strong enough to capture third place in both events.
