DETROIT -- The fourth-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team lost the third-place game of the Great Lakes Invitational, 7-4, to second-ranked Boston College on Saturday (Dec. 30) at Joe Louis Arena. It marked the first time U-M has lost both games of the GLI since the 1983-84 season.
The Wolverines dug themselves into a 3-0 hole before Scott Matzka (Port Huron, Mich.) put U-M on the board with a goal assisted by Bill Trainor (Canton, Mich.) and J.J. Swistak (W. Bloomfield, Mich.). Boston College added a fourth goal, answering Matzka's score to end the period at 4-1.
Michigan came out in the second period on fire with a quick score by Geoff Koch (Exeter, N.H.) at 1:30. Koch was set up by John Shouneyia (Bloomfield, Mich.) and Jed Ortmeyer (Omaha, Neb.) to close the gap to 4-2. Boston College fired back at the 9:52 mark, but Jeff Jillson (N. Smithfield, R.I.) put the Maize and Blue in striking distance with a goal with 1:07 left, ending the second period with the Eagles up 5-3.
Josh Langfeld (Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Shouneyia added goals for the Wolverines in the third period, but they weren't enough as the Eagles put in three of their own to take the final score to 8-5.
For the second straight game the Wolverines were without the services of three top players -- Mike Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, Ontario), Andy Hilbert (Howell, Mich.) and Mike Komisarek (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) -- who are competing in the World Junior Championship in Russia. Cammalleri is currently the leading scorer for Team Canada, while Hilbert and Komisarek are playing for Team USA, with Hilbert leading the Americans in scoring.
The Wolverines will return home next Friday (Jan. 5) for the first of a two-game series with Lake Superior State at Yost Ice Arena.

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Red Berenson
On the game ... "Anytime you score five goals and still lose, you didn't put together a good effort. Fifteen goals-against in two games is not Michigan Hockey."
On the back-to-back GLI losses ... "We were depleted on defense, but that is no excuse. We had a lackluster effort against Michigan Tech and we came into a game with a team like Boston College -- who are more explosive offensively -- and played poorly again."
Senior Forward Geoff Koch
On the game ... "Boston College came out and played harder than us. We just didn't win the little battles in the game. It's very disappointing as a senior to not have won a GLI title, but now we just have to regroup and set our sights on the rest of the season."
