Michigan has the most wins (9) in the history of the College Hockey Showcase.
The Wolverines have a record of 5-1-1 against Wisconsin in the College Hockey Showcase. The lone loss was in the first Showcase in 1993.
Michigan has a record of 4-3-0 against Minnesota in the College Hockey Showcase. Michigan won in its only CHS game played at Mariucci Arena.
For the first time in the history of the Showcase, all four teams are ranked in the national collegiate hockey polls.
Series History vs. Wisconsin
Thursday's game will be the 112th meeting between the Wolverines and the Badgers. Michigan leads the series 56-48-7. In Madison, Michigan is 16-29-1. The lone tie (1-1 on Nov. 29, 1998) came in Michigan's last trip to Wisconsin. Michigan is unbeaten in the last seven games (6-0-1) against the Badgers, dating back to Nov. 25, 1994.
Series History vs. Minnesota
Saturday's game will be the 247th meeting between the Wolverines and the Golden Gophers. Michigan trails in the series 113-119-14. In Minneapolis, the Wolverines are 39-70-7 against Minnesota. Michigan has lost just once -- a 6-3 decision at Yost in last year's College Hockey Showcase (Nov. 26, 1999) -- in the last seven meetings.
Michigan Head Coach Red Berenson
Red Berenson is in his 17th year as head coach of the Michigan Wolverines. Coach Berenson owns a career record of 429-210-42 and is the 15th winningest coach in NCAA history. Over his career, Berenson has 760 games associated with Michigan hockey (681 as a coach, 79 as a student-athlete). As the coach of the Wolverines, he has guided Michigan to two NCAA championships and total of nine CCHA regular-season and tournament championships. Under his direction, Michigan was the most successful program in the country during the 1990s, with 314 wins, and was the only school to qualify for all 10 NCAA championship tournaments in the decade.
Berenson vs. the Badgers and Golden Gophers
Michigan head coach Red Berenson holds a record of 7-3-1 against Wisconsin and the Badgers' head coach, Jeff Sauer. Berenson is 9-5-0 against Minnesota and 2-2-0 vs. Gophers' head coach, Don Lucia. Berenson led the Wolverines to a 3-2 overtime victory over the Lucia-coached Colorado College Tigers to win the 1996 NCAA championship.
Last Weekend
Michigan hosted the University of Alaska Fairbanks for a two-game series last weekend (Nov. 17-18). Michigan poured on the offense on Friday (Nov. 17), beating the Nanooks 8-0. Mike Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, Ontario), Jed Ortmeyer (Omaha, Neb.) and John Shouneyia (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) each tallied two goals in the contest. Andy Hilbert (Howell, Mich.) earned a career-high four assists in the game, and goaltender Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) stopped 23 shots for his fifth career shutout. On Saturday (Nov. 18), a pair of empty-net goals, including one on a delayed penalty, helped the Nanooks to a 5-2 win at Yost Ice Arena. It was U-M's first loss to UAF at Yost and just the second loss in the 24-game history of the series.
Going Way Back
Michigan has played more games against Minnesota (246) than any other opponent in the history of the program. The Wolverines trail in the series history 113-119-14.
Leading the Way
Senior Mark Kosick (Victoria, B.C.) is tied with Minnesota's Jordan Leopold for the College Hockey Showcase scoring lead among active players. Each has five points. For Kosick, all five points have come on assists, while Leopold has two goals and three assists for his five points.
Double Your Pleasure
Michigan and Minnesota lead all schools in College Hockey Showcase sweeps. The Wolverines have won both games of the Showcase twice (1996, '97), and they have never lost both games of a single Showcase.
Homecoming
Minnesota native Josh Langfeld (Coon Rapids, Minn.) will get his third chance to play in front of friends and family on Saturday (Nov. 25). From the suburbs of Minneapolis, Langfeld grew up in Gopher country before attending Michigan.
Firing Range
Michigan took 51 shots on goal against the Nanooks on Friday (Nov. 17). That was the first time the Wolverines took 50 or more shots on goal since they bombarded Niagara with 52 shots on goal in a 6-5 overtime win on Oct. 16, 1998.
Firing Range II
Michigan has outshot its opponents in each game this season. The Wolverines are averaging 36.7 shots per game compared to the opponents' 21.2 shots per game.
Outburst
Michigan's four goals in the third period against UAF on Friday (Nov. 17) was the second time this year the team has found the net four times in a period. The other was the third period against Miami (Oct. 28) in a 6-2 win.
The Start is the Key ...
The Wolverines have a perfect record of 6-0-0 when leading after the first period. When tied or trailing after one period of play, Michigan's record is 2-3-2.
... But Finishing Strong Doesn't Hurt
Michigan has scored more goals in the second and third periods of games (36) than its opponents have scored the entire season (32). In just the second and third periods, Michigan has allowed only 17 goals.
Shutting the Door
In eight of 13 games this year, Michigan has held the opposition to two or fewer goals in a game. Its record is 7-1-0 when that happens. The only loss is a 1-0 shutout against Michigan State (Nov. 4).
Tough Month
Michigan started the season undefeated with a record of 6-0-2 in October. Since changing the calendar to read November, the Wolverines have gone 2-3-0.
A Few Player Notes
Mark Kosick has entered U-M's top 50 in career scoring with 123 points (48-75-123). He is tied with Tom Stiles (1982-86) for 49th all-time at Michigan. Josh Langfeld (Coon Rapids, Minn.) needs just eight more points to join the same group. He has 56 goals and 59 assists for 115 points in his career.
Mark Mink has played in all 54 games of his career, the Wolverines' longest active consecutive games played streak. Jed Ortmeyer (Omaha, Neb.) had also played in all of the games in the last two seasons until he was forced to sit out against Ferris State (Nov. 11) after receiving a game disqualification the previous night.
Andy Hilbert leads the team with 13 power-play points (2-11-13). His 11 assists account for 26 percent of the team's total assists (42) on the power play.
Andy Hilbert also scored a career-high four points (0-4-4) against UAF on Friday (Nov. 17).
Jay Vancik was +5 on Friday (Nov. 17) against UAF. That is the highest plus/minus rating of any Wolverine this season. Last year, Vancik was +4 against Western Michigan (March 10) in the first round of the CCHA Tournament, the highest single-game rating of any player in the 1999-2000 season.
