Last Year
Last year U-M finished 15th in the nation at the NCAA National Championship at the Indiana University Cross Country Course in Bloomington, Ind. Brigham Young won the national title with 72 points. The Wolverines finished with 416 points, five points out of 14th place. Katie Jazwinski finished on top for the Wolverines, placing 41st and earning All-America honors with a time of 17:32.60. Other returning harriers who competed were Lisa Ouellet, who finished in 129th with a time of 18:11.40, and Julie Froud with a 178th-place finish and time of 18:31.60.
Michigan Success
Since 1993, Michigan has qualified for the NCAA Championships every year except 1996. In that time, the Wolverines have finished no worse than 15th place and have been as high as second in the nation, in 1994. U-M finished in the top 10 three other times; 1993 (sixth), '95 (seventh) and '97 (seventh). The Maize and Blue was 11th in 1998.
Michigan has also had success in the individual standings at the NCAA Championships. Katie McGregor (1996-98) won the national title in 1998 and had the other top Michigan finish in 1997, when she came in seventh overall.
All-America
Katie Jazwinski is looking to become a two-time All-American if she finishes in the top 15 at the NCAA Championships. If she does, it will be the fourth year in a row, and 11th out of 12 years, a Wolverine received an NCAA All-America citation. Under coach Mike McGuire, Michigan has received 13 All-America citations since 1992.
NCAA Regionals
U-M took second place at the 31-team NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Saturday (Nov. 11) at Eagle Crest Golf Club in Ypsilanti, Mich. to earn an automatic NCAA berth. Senior Katie Jazwinski paced the Wolverines with a ninth-place finish in the 6,000-meter race. Michigan (113 points) was the runner-up to the University of Wisconsin (65 points), just like the two finished two weeks prior at the Big Ten Conference Championships. Lisa Ouellet and sophomore Jane Martineau also ran well for the Maize and Blue, coming in 14th and 23rd, respectively.
