Series History vs. Alaska Fairbanks
Friday's game will be the 21st meeting between the Wolverines and the Nanooks. Michigan leads the series 19-1-0. The only loss was a 4-2 game last year (Oct. 22, 1999) in Fairbanks. At Yost, Michigan is a perfect 10-0-0 against UAF.
The Last Time
After falling to the Nanooks for the first time in the history of the series the previous night, Michigan bounced back to win a 4-1 contest in Fairbanks on Oct. 23, 1999. With the game tied 1-1 after two periods of play, Michigan exploded for three goals in the final period. The scoring was even as four different Wolverines found the net. Defenseman Jay Vancik (Medina, Ohio) netted his first collegiate goal in the contest. In net, Kevin O'Malley (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) made 29 saves for the win.
Last Weekend
Michigan and Ferris State split a home-and-home series with each team winning at home. On Friday (Nov. 10), the Wolverines defeated the Bulldogs 4-1 at Yost Ice Arena. Traveling to Ferris State on Saturday (Nov. 11), Michigan fell 5-4. Both games featured plenty of penalty minutes. In the series, the teams combined for 266 penalty minutes and 10 players were given game disqualifications for fighting. Highlights for the weekend included Craig Murray (Penticton, B.C.) finding the net twice and earning two assists for a four-point weekend. Also, Mike Roemensky (White Lake, Mich.) earned two assists and was +4 in the pair of games.
Michigan Head Coach Red Berenson
Red Berenson is in his 17th year as head coach of the Michigan Wolverines. Coach Berenson owns a career record of 428-209-42 and is the 15th winningest coach in NCAA history. Over his career, Berenson has 758 games associated with Michigan hockey (679 as a coach, 79 as a student-athlete). As the coach of the Wolverines, he has guided Michigan to two NCAA championships and total of nine CCHA regular-season and tournament championships. Under his direction, Michigan was the most successful program in the country during the 1990s, with 314 wins, and was the only school to qualify for all 10 NCAA championship tournaments in the decade.
Berenson vs. the Nanooks
Michigan head coach Red Berenson holds a record of 19-1-0 against Alaska Fairbanks and a 1-1-0 record against the Nanooks' head coach, Guy Gadowsky.
Alaska Fairbanks Head Coach Guy Gadowsky
Guy Gadowsky is in his second year as the head coach of the University of Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks. He holds a career mark of 7-30-5 (.226) and is 1-1-0 against the Wolverines. He won the first game of the season series last year (Oct. 22, 1999), the first time he had coached against Michigan.
Out of the Lineup
Kevin O'Malley, Dave Wyzgowski (North Street, Mich.) and Mike Komisarek (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) will not be available for Friday's game (Nov. 17) after receiving game disqualification penalties for their involvement in the bench-clearing brawl at the end of Saturday's game (Nov. 11) at Ferris State.
Senior Experience
Michigan's senior class has combined to score 15 goals and 21 assists for 36 points against the Nanooks in eight meetings over the last three years. Forward Mark Kosick (Victoria, B.C.) leads the way with four goals and seven assists for 11 points in eight career games against UAF.
Get Out the Map
This weekend marks the first time since March 7-8, 1997, that Michigan has hosted the Nanooks for consecutive games at Yost. That weekend, Michigan defeated UAF 8-1 and 11-0 to sweep the CCHA Tournament first-round series. Since that series, UAF has visited Yost twice, once in 1997-98 and once in 1998-99. Incidentally, those two games at the end of the 1996-97 season are the only postseason games in which the Nanooks have participated.
Not-So-Special Teams
The Wolverines have dominated special teams when playing UAF. Over the last 10 games of the series, Michigan is 22-for-79 (27.9 percent) with a man advantage while holding the Nanooks to 6-for-71 (8.5 percent) on the power play. More recently, Michigan has held UAF to just one power-play goal in its last 45 chances.
The Start is the Key
In both of the Wolverines' losses (Nov. 4 vs. Michigan State and Nov. 11 at Ferris State), they have trailed after the first period. When leading after one period of play, Michigan is a perfect 5-0-0.
Strong Finishes
Michigan has scored 29 goals in the second and third periods while allowing the opposition a total of just 27 goals so far this season.
Shutting the Door
In seven of 11 games this year, Michigan has held the opposition to two or fewer goals in a game. Its record is 6-1-0 when that happens. The only loss is a 1-0 shutout against Michigan State (Nov. 4).
Game Day Live
Both games this weekend (Nov. 17-18) against Alaska Fairbanks will feature Game Day Live for ice hockey on the Internet. Fans can log on to MGoBlue.com for all of the action. Live video, audio, notes and stats are available during the game.
