This Week
The 12th-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team will head south to take on No. 14 Georgia on Friday (Nov. 3) at Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, Ga., at 5 p.m., and seventh-ranked Florida on Saturday (Nov. 4) at 7:30 p.m at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center in Gainesville, Fla.
The Competition
Georgia -- The No. 14-ranked Bulldogs are 4-1 on the season after a 164-134 victory over North Carolina (Oct. 19) and taking three of four at the SEC East Dual-Meet Extravaganza in Knoxville, Tenn. Georgia defeated Florida (176-141), South Carolina (235-80) and Kentucky (199-118) and fell to Tennessee (176-143). Georgia topped Michigan last season 175-125 in Ann Arbor and leads the series 2-0. Florida -- The Gators, ranked seventh, are 2-3 this season after losing 127-110 in their dual opener to Alabama and splitting four duals at SEC East Dual-Meet Extravaganza. Georgia defeated Kentucky (199-113) and South Carolina (248-68) and lost to Tennessee (184-135) and Georgia (176-141) at the SEC meet. Wolverines Start Off Smoking
No. 12-ranked Michigan kicked off its season by placing first in the Eastern Michigan Quadrangular on Friday (Oct. 27) in Ypsilanti, Mich. U-M started off strongly by placing first in eight consecutive events to open the meet, and then went on to claim first in 11 of 13 events overall. The Wolverines tallied 781 team points, followed by Eastern Michigan in second place (538 points), Michigan State (500) in third, and Oakland University (330) finished fourth. The Wolverines had eight different first-place performers at the meet.
Multiple Winners
The Wolverines had a pair of multi-event winners at the EMU Quadrangular. Senior captain Scott Werner (Haymarket, Va./Paul VI HS) won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:51.78 and the 200-yard breaststroke with a NCAA consideration time of 2:01.71. Freshman Dan Ketchum (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) won the 200-yard freestyle with a 1:39.24 NCAA consideration time and placed first in the 500-yard freestyle (4:29.11).
Sophomores Shine
Sophomores Paul Ely (Beaverton, Ore./Sunset HS), Garrett Mangieri (Closter, N.J./Mercersburg Academy, Pa.), and Bryce Cox (Kendalville, Ind./East Noble HS) were all event winners at the EMU Quadrangular. Ely won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:51.45, Mangieri took the 100-yard freestyle (45.64) and Cox was victorious in the one-meter diving (279.30).
Victory Road
Other winners at the EMU Quadrangular included senior Mike O'Connor (Harper Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North HS) in the 1,000-yard freestyle, clocking 9:19.80; junior Matt Raines (Owosso, Mich./Corunna HS) in the 50-yard freestyle (21.23). Freshman diver Jason Coben (Newtown Square, Pa./Maple Newtown HS) took the three-meter diving (309.15), and the 400-yard medley relay team of junior Jordan Watland (Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka HS), Scott Werner, sophomore Tony Kurth (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales HS) and Dan Ketchum placed first with a time of 3:24.81.
