Wolverines Impressive at Marquette Invitational

MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team wrapped up action at the 2000 Marquette Invitational today (Sunday, Oct. 29), winning a pair of singles titles and finishing as the runner-up in doubles competition. The Wolverines won 23 of 29 singles matches (three of those setbacks came in matches pitting Wolverines against each other) and claimed victories in 10 of their 13 doubles matches at the tournament.
Freshman Chrissie Nolan (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS) won her first collegiate tournament, beating top-seeded Laura Garcia of Marquette in the finals (6-4, 4-6, 10-5 in third-set tie-breaker). Nolan compiled a 4-0 record as the No. 2 seed, beating Northern Illinois' Karrie Tyioran (6-2, 6-0), Illinois-Chicago's Nicole Derrouin (6-2, 6-2) and sophomore teammate Jen Duprez (Westhampton, N.Y./West Hampton Beach HS) by a 6-1, 6-3 score on her way to the title.
Duprez posted a 2-2 record in Flight 1 of the tournament, placing fourth after falling to freshman teammate Kavitha Tipirneni (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby HS) in the third-place match. Tipirneni, the No. 4 seed, posted a 3-1 tournament mark. She opened with victories over Marquette's Veronica Briseno (6-2, 2-6, 10-5 in third-set tie-breaker) and Annabelle Espinosa (7-5, 1-0 retired) in the first two rounds, before losing to top seed Laura Garcia of Marquette in the semifinals (6-1, 6-4).
In addition to Duprez and Tipirneni, junior Jen Vaughn (Jefferson City, Mo./Lawrence HS) finished in fifth place with a 3-1 record. Vaughn's only setback came against Garcia in the quarterfinals after opening with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Northern Illinois' Tanja Sukovic. Vaughn rallied from the loss with wins over Illinois-Chicago's Jackie Farr (6-1, 6-3) and No. 3 seed Genevieve Charron of Marquette (7-5, 6-4).
Freshman Kim Plaushines (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) picked up the Flight 2 singles title with a hard-fought victory (6-3, 0-6 and 10-5 in tie-breaker) over senior teammate Alison Sinclair (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins HS) in the final. Plaushines beat Illinois-Chicago's Alyson Stalzer (6-1, 6-2) and DePaul's Karen Falduto (6-2, 6-2) on the way to her first collegiate title. Sinclair finished as the runner-up after collecting wins over DePaul's Rachel Dybas (6-2, 6-3) and Illinois-Chicago's Zrjezdana Malesevic (6-1, 6-2). Senior Marya Farah (Linden, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) placed fifth in the flight with a 3-1 record.
In doubles action, top-seeded Jen Duprez and Kavitha Tipirneni reached the final before losing 8-4 to No. 2 seed Laura Garcia and Veronica Briseno of Marquette. Chrissie Nolan and Kim Plaushines placed third with a 3-1 record, while Jen Vaughn and Alison Sinclair finished in fifth place with a 2-1 mark. Marya Farah and freshman Lisa So (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow HS) registered a 3-0 record in round-robin doubles action.
