ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In its only home meet of the season, the No. 13-ranked University of Michigan women's cross country team was edged out by No. 4 Washington and finished runner-up at the Wolverine Interregional Sunday (Oct. 15) at the U-M Golf Course. The Huskies took three of the top four individual places and finished with 27 points to nip Michigan (35).
The Wolverines were once again led by senior All-American Katie Jazwinski (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS), who placed second overall. Junior Katy Radkewich (Hudson, Ohio/Beaumont HS) helped the Michigan cause with a fifth-place finish. Senior Lisa Ouellet (Sudbury, Ontario/Lasalle HS) was right behind Radkewich in sixth, only three seconds behind, and senior Julie Froud (St. Marys, Ontatio/St. Marys D.C.V.I.) came in ninth overall to round out the top four finishers for the Maize and Blue.
Both Michigan and Washington had four runners in the top 10 for the 5,000-meter race. The Huskies' Gillian Palmer, who took the individual title with a time of 17:25, tied the fourth fastest time ever on the U-M Golf Course. Jazwinski also had her personal best time on the course, and her effort ranks as the 10th fastest performance on the Wolverines' home course.
Michigan will return to action in two weeks when it goes to the Big Ten Conference Championships on Sunday (Oct. 29) in Madison, Wis. The women's 5,000-meter race starts at 10:45 a.m. CST.
