This Week
The No. 13-ranked Michigan women's cross country team will co-host, with the U-M men's cross country team, the eighth annual Wolverine Interregional Sunday (Oct. 15) at the U-M Golf Course. The women's 5,000-meter race will start at 10:30 a.m., with the men's 8,000-meter race following at 11 a.m.
Wolverine Interregional
Among the teams competing on the women's side are No. 4-ranked Washington, James Madison, LaSalle and host No. 13 Michigan. Washington won this meet last season and returns seniors Jen Schindler and Melinda Campbell, who finished second and seventh overall, respectively. Schindler had the 13th fastest time ever on the U-M Golf Course with a time of 17:39. James Madison came in third last season.
Michigan has won this meet four times in the seven-year history, and looks to improve its fifth-place finish last year. Katie Jazwinski came in 19th place last season, but already has two individual titles and one runner-up finish this year. Senior Lisa Ouellet (Sudbury, Ontario/Lasalle SS) led the Wolverines with an eighth-place finish a year ago. Junior Katie Ryan (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) posted a 50th-place finish at the 1999 Wolverine Interregional, with senior Julie Froud (St. Marys, Ontario/St. Marys D.C.V.I.) and sophomore Jeanne Spink (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea HS) coming in 63rd and 67th, respectively.
U-M Golf Course
The University of Michigan Golf Course serves as the home course for the Wolverine men's and women's cross country teams. Alister MacKenzie, named Golf Architect of the Century for the first 100 years of golf in America, designed the Michigan Golf Course. The course opened in 1931, and in the fall of 1992 underwent a $3.3 million restoration that was completed in the spring of 1994.
The U-M cross country trail follows the rolling terrain of the golf course, traversing almost all 18 holes at some point. Races begin on the fairway of the first hole with a climb up the 10th fairway midway through the race. The women's 5,000-meter and men's 8,000-meter races conclude between the first and ninth holes.
