Michigan was strong in all facets, especially in the sprints. Senior Maria Brown (Kingston, Jamaica/Immaculate Conception) repeated as the only multiple-event winner, capturing the 60- and the 200-meter dashes (7.50 and 24.62). Joining Brown in the winner's circle with her impressive performance was Regine Caruthers (Inglewood, Calif./St. Bernard HS), who won the 400-meter dash (56.50).
The Wolverines continued their success in the distance events as Michigan went on to record 1-2 sweeps in the 3,000- and 5,000-meter runs. Marcy Akard (Carmel, Ind./Cathedral HS) captured the 5,000-meter run (17:37.54), coming in two seconds ahead of runner-up Julie Froud (St. Mary's, Ontario/St. Mary's D.C.V.I.). Lisa Ouellet (Sudbury, Ontario/Lasalle Secondary) teamed with junior Katie Ryan (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) for the 1-2 finish in the 3,000 (9:50.22 and 9:52.58, respectively).
Other Maize and Blue victors included Nicole Denamur (Algoma, Wis./Algoma HS) and Brandi Bentley (Detroit, Mich./Marian HS) winning the high and long jumps (5-8 and 19-8 1/4), respectively. April Phillips (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) won the shot put (45-5 3/4) and sophomore multi-event athlete Tasha Phillips (Sarasota, Fla./Booker HS) captured the 60-meter hurdles (8.63). The Wolverines were also victorious in the distance medley relay.
Michigan continues its indoor season at the Meyo Invitational next Friday and Saturday (Feb. 4-5) at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.
