Michigan Opens Dual Season with 5-2 Win over DePaul

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team opened the 2000 dual meet season with a 5-2 victory over DePaul University at the Varsity Tennis Center Saturday afternoon (Jan. 15). The Wolverines won their fourth straight season opener at the Varsity Tennis Center and their 20th in 26 seasons of collegiate competition (20-6 overall season-opening record).

Michigan won two of the three doubles matches in commanding fashion to claim a 1-0 lead in the match. Senior co-captain Brooke Hart (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson HS) and freshman Joanne Musgrove (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich HS) started things for the Wolverines with an 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles. Sophomore Jen Vaughn (Jefferson City, Mo./Lawrence HS) and freshman Jen Duprez (Westhampton, N.Y./West Hampton Beach HS) followed the lead of Hart and Musgrove with an 8-3 win at the No. 1 spot to give Michigan a lead it would not relinquish.

DePaul kept Michigan from a doubles sweep as it claimed a 9-8 victory at No. 2 doubles in battle of the Fuzesi sisters (10-8 in the tie-breaker). Barbara Fuzesi, with Blue Demon teammate Szilvia Kelemen, posted a victory over her sister Szandra Fuzesi (Budapest, Hungary/Balassi Balint Gimnazium) and senior Erryn Weggenman (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS).

Hart, Musgrove, Vaughn and junior Alison Sinclair (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins HS) posted singles victories for the Wolverines to clinch the season-opening win. Hart beat Barbara Fuzesi in straight sets (6-2, 6-1) at the No. 1 spot, collecting her team-leading 10th win of the year (10-4).

Michigan hosts Western Michigan (Friday, Jan. 28, at 6 p.m.) and Yale (Sunday, Jan. 30, at 11 a.m.) at the Varsity Tennis Center in two weeks.
