Up Next for the Wolverines
The Michigan women's cross country team will travel to Bloomington, Ind., this weekend for the Sam Bell Invitational. The 5,000-meter race is scheduled to start at 11:15 a.m. at the Indiana University Cross Country Course.
Teams from across the country will compete in Saturday's invitational, including New Hampshire, Cincinnati and Portland State. Indiana, Northwestern and Michigan are the only Big Ten Conference schools participating.
Women Win Spiked Shoe Invitational
In an overwhelming performance, the U-M women's cross country team faced hardly any threat Saturday (Sept. 18) when it conquered the Spiked Shoe Invitational title with 30 points. The Wolverines' closest pursuer was Bucknell with 67 points.
The Michigan women are warding off the opposition and continuing their success with such runners as junior Lisa Ouellet (Sudbury, Ontario/Lasalle SS) and Elizabeth Kampfe (Decatur, Ill./MacArthur HS), who finished second and fourth, respectively, to lead the Wolverines to victory.
"I thought we went out to accomplish a couple things," commented head coach Mike McGuire on the trip to Penn State. "We wanted to get a good race in on the course, which will be hosting the Big Ten Championship, and improve. Elizabeth Kampfe improved to where she was last season. Erin White (Battle Creek, Mich./Central HS) and Katie Ryan (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) had great performances. Overall, it was a good showing."
-- For the second consecutive meet Lisa Ouellet was the Wolverines' top finisher. Saturday (Sept. 18), Ouellet finished second overall in the field of 200 runners.
-- Freshman Lyndsi Gay (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg HS) continues to run competitively with the upperclassmen. She was the only freshman to run at the Spiked Shoe Invitational.
