ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's gymnastics team member Justin Toman (Wallingford, Conn./Lyman Hall HS) has been selected to represent the United States at the 1999 World University Games. The U-M sophomore co-captain, one of five individuals selected from 14 U.S. National Team members, will travel to Palma da Mallorca, Spain, to compete for the title on July 3-7.
In addition, U-M men's gymnastics assistant coach Mike Burns, recently named the NCAA men's gymnastics Assistant Coach of the Year, will be accompanying Toman to Spain as an assistant coach of the United States World University Games team.
"These gymnasts that will be representing the United States at the World University Games are the elite of the elite," Michigan's head coach Kurt Golder commented. "I'm very happy for Justin and Mike. This is such a wonderful opportunity to participate in such a great event."
"I was elated when I found out that I would be traveling with America's top gymnasts to compete in the World University Games," Toman said. "It is such an honor to be included with such gymnasts."
Toman led the Wolverines to the 1999 NCAA national championship by earning All-America honors in four events. He won the parallel bars and placed second in the all-around, third on the horizontal bar and fifth on the pommel horse.
