Michigan Magic Runs Out in NCAA Quarterfinal Loss
3/27/1999 12:00:00 AM | Ice Hockey
After the Wolverines turned the puck over behind their own net, Jason Krog and Mike Souza banged the puck out in front of the goal, where Haydar was able to slide it across the goal line for the 2-1 New Hampshire win. It marked the sixth time in the last seven years that the Wolverines have ended their season in overtime, including victories in the 1996 and 1998 NCAA title games.
Michigan, the No. 5 seed in the East Regional, had a six-game winning streak snapped and closed its 1999 season with a 25-11-6 record. The top-seeded Wildcats (30-6-3) advance to the Frozen Four in Anaheim, Calif., to meet either Colorado College or Michigan State in the national semifinals.
The Wolverines trailed 1-0 much of the game but got the equalizer at 10:00 of the third period off a face-off. Bobby Hayes (Westland, Mich.) won the draw to the left of the New Hampshire goal, skated directly to the net and punched the puck between Wildcat goalie Ty Conklin's pads for his fourth goal of the playoffs and seventh of the season.
New Hampshire struck first when it scored with 9.2 seconds left in the first period. The Wolverines turned the puck over in their own zone, and Haydar picked up the loose puck and snapped a shot on goal. Blackburn made the initial save, but Souza banged in the rebound for a 1-0 New Hampshire lead.
Blackburn kept the Wolverines alive throughout the game, turning away shot after shot, including numerous opportunities by Haydar. Blackburn stoned Haydar on a shot and his rebound attempt midway through the first period, on a wrap-around five minutes into the second period and on a 2-on-1 early in the third period. Then, 59 seconds into overtime, Blackburn made a great glove save on Haydar, who was left all alone in the slot.
Blackburn turned aside 32 shots in earning a berth on the All-East Regional team. He was joined on the all-regional team by Michigan captain Bubba Berenzweig (Arlington Heights, Ill.) as well as Haydar and Souza of New Hampshire and David Cullen and Regional MVP Steve Kariya of Maine.

QUOTES
COACH RED BERENSON
"Obviously, you feel bad at the outcome of a game like this but I think last night's game (5-3 win over Denver) took a toll on us. I think it showed in the first period and it may have showed as the game wore on, but I was very impressed with New Hampshire and their speed and the fact they really didn't break down and give us many offensive chances.
"Our kids gave us everything they had and that's all you can ask. A few weeks ago, we didn't know we'd be in the NCAA's and then we had a great weekend at Joe Louis and won the CCHA playoff championship. And last night, well, we certainly didn't know if we'd even be in tonight's game, but this team wouldn't give up and won in a great college hockey game. Tonight, I don't think we had enough left over.
"We hung in there and let's face it, we had great goaltending by Josh Blackburn and he gave us a chance to win. Sometimes you need that and we got it, and we still felt we had a chance to win this game in overtime and it just didn't happen."
SENIOR CAPTAIN BUBBA BERENZWEIG
"We tried to match lines today, we tried to get Bobby Hayes on (Jason) Krog's line, but we really just tried to play our game ... This team is pretty quick and Krog is really talented, as he showed me tonight at the end of this game."
FRESHMAN GOALTENDER JOSH BLACKBURN
On the game-winning goal in overtime ...
"The puck was shot out in front to my left side. It hit my stick and it was just laying on the ice and he just banged it in."
