Michigan Downs Falcons 3-1 to Split Weekend Series
12/4/1999 12:00:00 AM | Ice Hockey
Mark Kosick (Victoria, B.C.) gave the Wolverines (12-5-0, 8-4-0 CCHA) the lead when he picked up the puck to the right of goalie Tyler Masters and lifted it over Masters' glove hand at the 17:37 mark of the first period. It was Kosick's fourth career goal against Bowling Green in 10 games.
Just over a minute later Comrie scored his second short-handed goal of the season, giving Michigan a 2-0 lead. Jed Ortmeyer (Omaha, Neb.) hit Comrie with a pass at the Falcon blue line. Comrie skated past defenseman Grady Moore and beat Masters to give the Wolverines a two-goal lead heading into the first intermission.
The Falcons (5-10-0, 5-6-0 CCHA) cut the Michigan lead to 2-1 just 31 seconds into the second period when Marc Barlow's shot from the left point beat Scarpace. The Wolverines held the one-goal lead until midway through the third period, when Jeff Jillson (N. Smithfield, R.I.) scored his fifth goal of the season to give the Wolverines a 3-1 lead. Just 19 seconds after the Wolverines killed off a minor penalty, Jillson fired a slap shot from the right point that tucked inside the far post to give the Wolverines a two-goal advantage.
The Wolverines wrap up the first half of the season when they host CCHA newcomer Nebraska-Omaha for two games next weekend. Friday's game (Dec. 10) starts at 7:35 p.m., and Saturday's (Dec. 11) contest begins at 7:05 p.m.

Head Coach Red Berenson
On the early play of the game ... "I thought it was important that we got the first goal tonight, and it was a huge goal for us. (Mike) Comrie's goal was obviously big. It was a play they could have called a penalty on, and it was an issue because he hooked the guy and nearly tripped him. The guy went down, and Comrie took the puck and ended up scoring. It could have been a controversial play."
On Bowling Green's offensive assault ... "We gave up 16 shots in the first period. You have to give Bowling Green credit -- they came in here and really came after us, not unlike how we went after them yesterday. I just didn't think they could do it to us (tonight). We were trying to put some pressure on them, and it turned out they were putting pressure on us."
On goaltender L.J. Scarpace ... "I thought [Scarpace] was a big factor in the game, and he made some good close-in saves and some backdoor saves. He made the saves he should have made. He kept us in the game when we were reeling, and there is no question Bowling Green had the momentum for a big part of the game. So it wasn't like a typical Michigan victory where you could just see it happening in the first period."
Goaltender L.J. Scarpace
On the amount of shots he faced ... "[It was] a little more than in the last few games. The first couple shots were perimeter shots, so it got me into the game faster than normal. I didn't have to face one quality chance early and that's always helpful."
Defenseman Jeff Jillson
On playing five defensemen instead of six ... "Personally, I think I play better when I get more ice time. As far as the other guys, the more you play the more comfortable you feel. The more chances you get to touch the puck, the more you feel part of the game. That translates into a lot of confidence on the ice when you get your shifts. When you keep going out there, you are going to have the confidence to produce. It seems to be working out pretty good so far."
Center Mike Comrie
On his shorthanded goal ... "I went for the puck, and I missed it. [The defender] stepped on my stick and the puck went to (Jed) Ortmeyer. He made a great pass, and I was breaking in. There was a guy on me, but luckily I was just a step ahead of him. The goalie went to poke check the puck away, so I lifted it over him."
