ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Michigan men's gymnastics team, the reigning NCAA and Big Ten Conference champions, gave a glimpse into their 2000 season Friday evening (Dec. 3) with the annual Maize and Blue Intrasquad in front of 232 fans at Cliff Keen Arena.
The Maize team, paced by Scott Vetere (Pennsburg, Pa./Quakertown HS), edged out the Blue team by a 165.500-163.750 margin. Vetere, the 1999 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, captured the team high bar, still rings and vault bragging rights in the intrasquad competition. His 9.950 on the vault not only represented a personal high but is better than the school record of 9.925 set by Daniel Diaz-Luong (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt HS) in last season's NCAA preliminaries.
Kevin Roulston (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township HS), back in action after sitting out the majority of last season due to injury, led the Blue team with a meet-high 55.300 in the all-around. Roulston also contributed the top performance on the floor excerise (9.600).
The other event winners were senior Jose "LaLo" Haro (Puebla, Pue., Mexico/Instituto Iberia) with a 9.400 on the parallel bars and sophomore Josh Levin (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West HS) on the pommel horse with a 9.90, a mark higher than the school record turned in by Vetere last season at Michigan State.
The Wolverines return to action on Jan. 15 when they open the 2000 season at the Windy City Invitational in Chicago.
