Renes, Hutchinson Earn All-Big Ten First Team "Double"

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan senior nose tackle Rob Renes (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa HS) and senior/junior offensive guard Steve Hutchinson (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs HS) earned a pair of All-Big Ten Conference first team honors when the 1999 football awards were announced Tuesday (Nov. 30) by the conference office.

Tri-captains for the Wolverines, Renes and Hutchinson were named on the all-conference football teams selected by Big Ten coaches and the Big Ten media panel. A total of six Wolverines earned first team honors on the All-Big Ten teams.

Senior linebacker Ian Gold (Belleville, Mich./Belleville HS), senior strong safety Tommy Hendricks (Houston, Texas/Eisenhower HS) and sophomore wide receiver David Terrell (Richmond, Va./Huguenot HS) earned first team honors on the team selected by the coaches. Senior/junior offensive tackle Jeff Backus (Norcross, Ga./Norcross HS) was named to the first team selected by the media panel.

Tailback Anthony Thomas (Winnfield, La./Winnfield HS), Michigan's top rusher, earned All-Big Ten second team honors on both teams and was joined by senior linebacker Dhani Jones (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill HS) and Backus on the team selected by the coaches.

All-Big Ten second team selections on the media team included senior wide receiver Marcus Knight (Sylacauga, Ala./Comer HS), Thomas, Gold and Terrell.

Senior quarterback and tri-captain Tom Brady (San Mateo, Calif./Serra HS) and senior rush linebacker James Hall (New Orleans, La./St. Augustine HS) earned honorable mention status on both squads. Senior fullback Aaron Shea (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa HS) and Knight were named honorable mention by the coaches and Hendricks was named honorable mention by the media.

Hutchinson is the lone Wolverine repeat selection on both first teams from the 1998 season and he has been named All-Big Ten first team three times by the media and twice by the coaches (1998, '99). Hutchinson was a second team selection by the coaches in 1997.
