Streets Reaches 100 Receiving Yards at Half
Senior split end Tai Streets reached the 100-yard receiving plateau in the first half. Streets ended the half with eight receptions for 101 yards. Streets currently has 85 career receptions and 1,350 receiving yards.
Knight Makes First Career Start
Junior flanker Marcus Knight started his second career game today, collecting a team-high and career-best 126 yards receiving. Knight caught five passes, including 42 and 51-yard passes from Tom Brady. His only other start came against Indiana last year, where he registered a then career-best two reception for 23 yards.
100-Yard Receiving Duo
The starting wide receiving duo of Tai Streets and Marcus Knight each gained over 100 yards receiving on the day. They became the first combination since Mercury Hayes (6 receptions for 132 yards) and Amani Toomer (eight for 128) surpassed the 100-yard receiving plateau against Penn State on Nov. 18, 1995.
Whitley Makes First Career Start and Interception
Sophomore cornerback James Whitley made his first career start after seeing action in all 12 games as a back-up last year. Whitley registered his first interception in the second quarter and finished the contest with seven tackles (five solo, two assists). He made his career debut as a punt returner, returning one punt for six yards.
True Freshmen First Timers
Six freshmen made their career debuts against Notre Dame. Larry Foote was the first freshman to see action, playing on the kickoff squad after the team's first quarter field goal. Running back Justin Fargas made his offensive debut on the team's second drive. Fargas finished the game with 15 yards on four carries and returned a kickoff for 17 yards. The third freshmen to see action was cornerback Todd Howard (Bolingbrook, IL) who contributed on the punt return unit. The wide receiving tandem of David Terrell and Marquise Walker both saw action offensively, tallying a reception each. Quarterback Drew Henson was the final freshmen to enter the game, engineering a late touchdown drive in the fourth quarter in which he connected on 5-of-8 passes for 55 yards and rushing once for 17 yards.
Most Points Yielded Since 1991
The 36 points given up by the Wolverines was the most since they yielded 51 points to Florida State on Sept. 28, 1991. The points were also the most scored by Notre Dame against Michigan in the series (the previous high was 35 in 1943).
Wolverines Suffer First Season Opening Loss Since 1990
Michigan lost its first opener since the 1990 season when it lost to Notre Dame (28-24) in South Bend. The Wolverines had won five consecutive season openers and entered the game with a 6-0-1 record in the previous seven openers. The tie also came against the Irish, a 17-17 affair in 1992.
