University of Michigan Hall of Honor

- Induction:
- 1989
Marie Hartwig was synonymous with women's athletics and the University of Michigan for more than 75 years. From 1925 to 1929, Hartwig was a gifted student-athlete and leader in the Women's Athletic Association, the sponsor of all women's sport activities at Michigan.
Hartwig was then hired by Dr. Margaret Bell and shepherded the Women's Athletic Association from 1930 to 1969 while rising from Instructor to Professor to Interim Director of the Department of Physical Education for Women. During this tenure, Hartwig directed the national Athletic Federation of College Women (predecessor of the AIAW) from 1939 to 1947 and was editor of the national standards Women's Basketball Guidebooks in 1947-48 and 1948-49.
In 1973, she was named the inaugural Director for Women's Intercollegiate Athletics and was appointed Associate Athletic Director in charge of Women's Intercollegiate Athletics. She retired from this position in 1976 and as Professor Emeritus.
Hartwig remained actively involved in the progress of Women's Athletics at Michigan until her death in 2001. The annual Marie "Pete" Hartwig Outstanding Woman Intramural Athlete Award commenced in 1976. The Marie Hartwig Scholarship is awarded annually to a women Varsity athlete by the U-M Alumnae Council. Michigan Athletics annually honors the outstanding junior woman varsity athlete with the Marie Hartwig Award.
On Dec. 11, 1990, the building that was once Ferry Fieldhouse and later the women's athletics building was renamed the Marie Hartwig Building in her honor. Along with 1989 Athletic Hall of Honor induction, Marie received the 1992 "Spirit of Michigan" Award and the 1996 Distinguished Alumni Service Award from the U-M Alumni Association, was named Honorary Life Member of the M-Women organization, and received the Applause Award and Honorary Life Membership from the Interlochen Alumni Organization recognizing her 39 summers leading the Counselor Education program at National Music Camp.
