Jim Skinner is one of the finest breaststroke swimmers in the history of the University of Michigan men’s swimming and diving team. He won the 200-yard breaststroke Big Ten titles in 1941 and 1942.  Along with the individual titles, he was part of the U-M 1941 NCAA Championship 300-yard medley team with Francis Heydt and Clair Morse. The ‘41 U-M swimming and diving team also won the NCAA title for the fifth consecutive year, edging Yale by just three points. Skinner also won the 200-yard Big Ten breaststroke title in 1941, 1942 and 1943 plus the 300-yard medley in 1941. He did not compete in the 1943 NCAA Championships after deciding to concentrate on his medical studies as part of the Naval Medical Training Program. For the 1942-43 school year, he was elected president of the senior medical class and was also elected as president of the Galens. Before attending U-M, Skinner set a national AAU outdoor meet record in August of 1939 swimming the 200-yard breaststroke for the Detroit Athletic Club coached by Matt Mann.Â
