Harry Newman

One of Michigan first All-America quarterbacks, Harry Newman was one of the most versatile athletes ever to wear the maize and blue. Newman led Michigan to three straight Big Ten championships from 1930 to 1932; a stretch where Michigan lost only a one game. In 1932, Newman dominated opponents with his arm and with his feet, leading the Wolverines to the national championship. He was named an All American and widely accepted as the finest player in the country in 1932, earning the Douglas Fairbanks Trophy as the Most Valuable Player -- the predecessor to the Heisman Trophy. After Michigan, Newman went on to a successful professional career with the New York Giants.
