University of Michigan Hall of Honor

George Sisler
- Induction:
- 1979
George Sisler is still considered one of the best all-around baseball players the University of Michigan has ever had grace its field. When he did not pitch, he played first base and the outfield. Legendary coach Branch Rickey was his first U-M coach until 1913 when Rickey left U-M to manage in the major leagues. But it was his next coach Carl Lundgren that was given credit for developing Sisler. Â As varsity pitcher, he accumulated a 13-3 win-loss record with more than 200 strikeouts, fanning 20 batters in one seven inning game. He also batted .404 (129 for 297) for the Wolverines. He signed with the St. Louis Browns in 1915 and is not only considered one of the greats in their franchise history; he is also considered one of the best-fielding first basemen in Major League Baseball history. He batted over .400 twice while amassing over 200 hits six times. In 1920, the first baseman played every inning of 154 games, established a major league record with 257 hits, recorded 122 RBI, scored 137 runs, batted .407 and stole 42 bases on his way to winning his first of two batting titles. Two years later, Sisler had a 42-game hitting streak, batting .420 for the year on his way to collecting the newly created American League MVP award. In 1939, Sisler was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame. He died on March 26, 1973.
