Gene Derricotte

Gene Derricotte earned four varsity football letters and played on the back-to-back championship teams of 1947 and 1948. Derricotte was one of the University's first African American athletes in the era when NCAA Division I college football was beginning to integrate. An exceptional athlete, he led the Wolverines in total offense as a freshman in 1944 and set school records in punt returns and punt return yardage that stood for 30 years. Derricotte received degrees in pharmacy and dentistry from U-M and went on to serve 24 years with the United States Air Force and was a member of the famed Tuskegee Airmen. In March 2007, he was one of six surviving Tuskegee Airmen honored at a ceremony held in Washington D.C., where they were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in recognition of their service to the United States.
