University of Michigan Hall of Honor

Francis Wistert
- Induction:
- 1981
- Class:
- 1934
Francis Wistert was the first of three Wistert brothers to earn football All-America tackle honors at Michigan and wear the legendary number 11 for the Maize and Blue. With Chuck Bernard, he was one of chief reasons why the 1933 Wolverine lines were considered one of the best in college football. Wistert played on three consecutive Big Ten Conference football championship teams, including two that won back-to-back national championships. Even though his name is synonymous with football at U-M, his talent in baseball not only earned him three letters in baseball at U-M, but he was also named the Big Ten Conference baseball MVP in 1934. He was signed to play for Major League Baseball's Cincinnati Reds immediately after graduation. He only played three games at the major league level but did play five years professionally in the minors. Eventually, he entered the practice of law where he attained an outstanding position in industrial relations. He was named to National Football Foundation Hall of Fame in 1967. He passed away in April, 1985.
