Douglas Roby is considered one of the finest Michigan athletes in the first part of the 20th century as he starred in 1921 and 1922 as a left fielder on the baseball team and as a starting fullback on the Fielding Yost’s football squad. He was also a member of Michigamua, Sphinx and Phi Delta Theta fraternity. In 1951 Roby was elected President of the National Amateur Athletic Union and was an active member of the United States Olympic Committee. In 1952, while in Finland in attendance at the Olympic Games, he was elected a member of the International Olympic Committee. He was the Vice President of the United States Olympic Committee from 1953 until 1965, when he became President of the USOC. In 1955, while in Mexico City in attendance at the Pan American Games, he was elected President of the Pan American Sports Organization and held that position until the close of the Pan Am Games in Chicago in 1959.
