Don Lund
- Induction:
- 1984
- Class:
- 1945
Don Lund is one of a select group of Michigan athletes who earned nine or more letters in varsity competition. Lund attended Michigan from 1941 through 1945 and earned three letters each in football, baseball and basketball and played on three championship teams -- one in football and two in baseball. He played fullback on Fritz Crisler's championship team of 1943. He played guard in basketball and was a centerfielder on two of Ray Fisher's title-winning teams in 1944 and 1945, captaining the team as a senior. Following his college career, Lund attracted the attention of Hall of Famer Branch Rickey, who signed the Michigan centerfielder in 1945 to a Brooklyn Dodger contract. When Ray Fisher retired as head baseball coach at Michigan in 1959, Lund was chosen to replace him. His Wolverines won the Big Ten title in 1961 and the NCAA championship in 1962.
