Dick Kempthorn

A native of Canton, Ohio, Dick Kempthorn came to U-M in 1946 after a one-year stint in the armed forces. He earned three varsity letters in football while playing on three Big Ten champion teams and the national championship squads of 1947 and 1948. Michigan's Most Valuable Player in 1949, Kempthorn was a second team Grantland Rice All-American, and he received the 1949 Detroit Newscasters All-American Award. Â He earned his bachelor's degree in business administration from U-M in 1950 and served as an assistant coach under Bennie Oosterbaan during the 1950 season, which culminated in a berth to the 1951 Rose Bowl. Â Kempthron went on to have a decorated military career, flying 101 missions and earned the Soldier Medal for saving a pilot from a burning aircraft.
