In a four-year basketball career from 1979-82, Orchard Lake, Michigan, native Diane Dietz not only put women's athletics on the map at Michigan, she defined a true Wolverine legend for the ages. Though the 5-foot-9-inch player originally started as a guard, she took over the forward duties at the beginning of her junior year. A four-year starter, Dietz led the team in scoring each season en route to a record 2,076 career points. She still remains in the top 10 of seven career statistical categories and holds the record for game scoring with a 45-point effort against Illinois. While Dietz was earning first team All-Michigan AIAW honors three times and state Player of the Year accolades as a senior, she was also excelling in the classroom. She was the recipient of Academic All-America honors during her final three years and was awarded the Conference Medal of Honor in 1982, the first Michigan woman to be so honored. She graduated in 1982 and later earned her law degree. Dietz was honored with the prestigious Gerald R. Ford Award in 1995.
