University of Michigan Hall of Honor

Bruce Hilkene
- Induction:
- 1992
Bruce Hilkene holds the rare distinction of twice being named captain of the football squad. He was first elected captain in 1944 when he played end for Coach Fritz Crisler. In 1945, Hilkene also lettered for Bennie Oosterbaan on the U-M basketball team but was later encouraged to stick with one sport. After a stint in the U.S. Navy, Hilkene returned to the team in 1946 a much bigger and stronger player. His size allowed him to move from end to offensive tackle, but the respect he garnered from his teammates and coaches was unchanged, and he was again named captain of the Wolverines. A member of the 1947 team, Hilkene helped lead Michigan to the 1948 Rose Bowl and a national championship.
