Bob Chappuis was an All-America halfback and star of Michigan's 1947 Western Conference and Rose Bowl champions and lettered in baseball as a catcher and an outfielder. His early athletic career was interrupted when he entered Air Force as an aerial gunner in World War II. After being shot down and taken prisoner on his 21st mission over Italy, he escaped and managed to reach the British lines after several months in the hands of Italian partisans. He resumed his football career in grand fashion in the fall of 1946. He shattered the Big Ten offensive record held by Otto Graham by running and passing for 1,039 yards. In the 1948 Rose Bowl, he led the 49-0 pounding of USC by setting a new Rose Bowl total offensive record of 279 yards. He was a consensus All-America team member in 1947 and the runner-up in Heisman Trophy voting.
