Game Notes Nuggets
• The Wolverines are building on a 17-game home winning streak dating back to 2021. It is the longest home winning streak under head coach Jim Harbaugh and the program's best since a 21-game streak from 1998-2001 under coach Lloyd Carr.
• Twenty-two (22) players have their Michigan debuts so far this season, including 12 true freshmen and nine transfer additions.
• Seven players have made their first starts as Wolverines this season, including three on offense (AJ Barner, Myles Hinton, Drake Nugent) and four on defense (Keshaun Harris, Quinten Johnson, Keon Sabb, Josh Wallace).
• In J.J. McCarthy's 15 starts, the U-M offense has produced 64 touchdowns and 26 field goals on the 153 drives during which McCarthy starts and finishes the possession -- 41.8 percent of McCarthy-led drives lead to touchdowns and Michigan has scored points on 58.8 percent of all such possessions.
• McCarthy completed 13 consecutive passing attempts to open the game, a record for quarterbacks under Harbaugh. Previously, the longest streak occurred when McCarthy went 8-for-8 to open last season's Indiana game. McCarthy nearly matched his career-best 15 straight completions -- also a Harbaugh-era record -- from last weekend's win over East Carolina; that streak began mid-game.
• Through two games, McCarthy has completed 48-of-55 pass attempts (26-of-30 in week one). According to the CBS broadcast, McCarthy has the fourth-highest completion percentage through two games in NCAA Division I history.
• Since the year 2000, only FBS two quarterbacks have a higher completion percentage through their first two games (minimum 50 attempts) than McCarthy's 48-of-55 (87.3 percent): Corey Robinson at Troy (2013; 47-of-51) and Geno Smith (2012; 66-of-75).
• Not only does McCarthy lead the country in completion percentage (87.3 percent). He also ranks fourth in pass efficiency (202.5), 14th in yards per pass attempt (10.15) and 19th in completions per game (24).
• McCarthy's season-long 9.62 yards per attempt includes a lofty 18.25 YPA on play-action concepts (12-of-12 for 219 yards).
• McCarthy's two passing performances to start the 2023 season rank one-two in single-game completion percentage (min. 25 attempts) all-time at Michigan. His 66.5 percent career completion percentage (290-for-436) is ranked first all-time at U-M (minimum 200 attempts).
• McCarthy's high completion percentage has been buoyed by strings of 15 and 13 consecutive connections against East Carolina and UNLV, respectively. Those are the two longest completion streaks by any quarterback under coach Jim Harbaugh.
• McCarthy is up to 32 career passing touchdowns, three shy of entering the top 10 all-time (Tom Brady, 35). His 7.3 career touchdown percentage matches Tom Harmon for fourth-best all-time.
• With three touchdowns in the opener and another two last weekend, wide receiver Roman Wilson is one of two FBS receivers with multiple touchdowns in each game his team has played this season, along with Vanderbilt's Will Sheppard (two in each game, three games played).
• Wilson surpassed his 2022 touchdown total (four) in eight quarters (10 receptions) to begin the 2023 season. He is second nationally in points per game (15.0); running back Blake Corum ranks seventh (12.0).
• Wilson is one of five Wolverines to ever score five-plus receiving touchdowns in any two-game stretch, joining Derrick Alexander (1991), Desmond Howard (1991), Mario Manningham (1996), and Jehu Chesson (2015). Wilson is the only one to do it in the first two games of a season, though.
• With another three rushing touchdowns last weekend, Corum is up to 35 for his career, sixth all-time at Michigan. Corum needs another four scores to match Chris Perry and reach the top five. Corum's 2,645 rushing yards are 255 shy of the top 10 all-time.
• With five receptions for 26 yards last weekend, running back Donovan Edwards is up to 47 career catches for 524 yards. He has entered the top 10 in all-time receptions among running backs and passed Tyrone Wheatley for seventh all-time in yardage. He'll need four more receptions to match Wheatley for ninth place all-time and will enter the top five in career receiving yards with another 42 yards, tying his position coach Mike Hart.
• The offensive line is yet to allow a sack this season and ranks fourth in the country with only three negative plays all season.
• Through two weeks of nonconference play, U-M is second in the nation in scoring defense (five points per game). Opponents have totaled 14 first downs across two fourth quarters and 13 first downs across six other quarters.
• Five different players combined to produce five sacks against UNLV last weekend: Kenneth Grant, Jaylen Harrell (1.5 each), Derrick Moore (one), Mason Graham and Kris Jenkins (0.5 each). PFF credited seven different Wolverine defenders with at least one quarterback hurry.
• Punter Tommy Doman is averaging 4.46 seconds of hangtime per attempt, placing him fourth nationally and first in the Big Ten among those with at least two punts.
• U-M's pass rush was active up front in the opener despite ECU quarterback Mason Garcia releasing the ball in 2.82 seconds per pass attempt (18), on average. Graham led the defense with four hurries on 16 pass-rush snaps, according to PFF.
