MADISON, Wis.-- Senior Michael Holody(Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) converted on a penalty kick with 24 seconds remaining in regulation to deliver the University of Michigan men's soccer team a 1-1 tie at Wisconsin in the Big Ten conference opener on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 27) at the McClimon Soccer Complex.
Holody paced the Wolverines with five shots -- four of them on goal. Senior/junior Patrick Sperry(Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) made five stops in the 110-minute contest.
Michigan made one final strike with time dwindling down in the second half, drawing the penalty kick that leveled the score at 1-1 and sent the game into overtime. Junior Mauro Fuzetti(Houston, Texas/Stratford) took a pass from junior Peri Marosevic(Rockford, Ill/Edison Academy) on a run in from the top of the box, but just as he got his foot on the ball, Fuzetti was taken out by a high tackle from behind. Fuzetti attempted to take a shot but it dribbled wide of the goal. The officials immediately signaled for the penalty kick, setting up the dramatic finish.
Holody was selected to take the shot for the Wolverines. He took a slow stride toward the ball and struck a chest-high drive on the inside of the left post, beating the diving Badger goalie by a wide margin.
Wisconsinled the game from the 28th minute, scoring a goal off of a scramble in front of the U-M net at 27:49. Michigan made a valiant effort on the attack, touching the ball twice before UW's Kenny Dix finally found the back of the cage. Wisconsin took a corner kick toward the near post. Sperry got a piece of it but not enough to clear the box. A Badger then took aquick shot toward the gaping net, but Holody -- standing on the goal line -- blocked the ball out to the top of the box where Dix sent a hard shot into the left side of the cage. Sperry's hand and Holody's head came close to deflecting the ball wide, but the shot narrowly snuck into the net.
Michigan got a good scoring chance in the second overtime frame, but was turned away by the Badger netminder. Senior Jake Stacy(Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) took a pass on the left side of the field behind the defense. He took one touch on the ball and lined up a 17-yard shot buthis blast was knocked down by the goalkeeper and batted around in a crowd before it was eventually corralled by Wisconsin to end the threat.
Michigan has a non-conference match next on the schedule when Notre Dame comes to town on Wednesday (Oct. 1) for a 4:30 p.m. contest on Eastern Michigan's Scicluna Field in Ypsilanti, Mich.

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Steve Burns
On the outcome of the game ... "It was a tale of two halves for us. I thought that Wisconsin did a good job keeping the game in front of them. It was difficult to get behind them and the game never stretched out. In the second half, we pressed more and spread things out to allow our athleticism to take over. You have to give credit to Wisconsin, they came out to win and played hard. I know both teams walked off the field disappointed with a tie."
On the play of Michael Holody ... "Michael is a guy that, when we switch to our goal-down formation, he goes forward and plays center forward. He is a wide body with a nose for the goal and is dominant in the air. He can collect balls and put balls on net -- with that came some shots. He was a key player in us being able to equalize late and he put us in a position to win it in overtime."
